The Road Keeps Talking Back — dbuck

Verse 1:
I left before the morning lifted its head.
Dust clung to my boots from the night before.
The sky looked like it wanted to rain but couldn’t decide.
I walked until the towns behind me dissolved into heat.

Verse 2:
A rusted sign leaned sideways in the weeds.
Its paint long gone but it still pointed me onward.
There’s a freedom in not knowing where I’ll sleep.
There’s a weight in remembering why I left.

Chorus (Call and Response):
Caller: “Where you going, stranger?”
Response: “Anywhere the wind pulls me.”
Caller: “What keeps you moving?”
Response: “A quiet voice only I can hear.”
Caller: “Will you ever turn back?”
Response: “Not while the road keeps talking back.”

Verse 3:
Night brings the soft hum of distant engines.
I feel the company of others drifting through the dark.
I warm my hands over a tin-can fire.
Listening for that voice beneath the wind and gravel.
